We are currently looking for a Buyer – Civil Engineering to join the team. This is a role which is site based and you will be required to visit various Alun Griffiths sites across their scope of works / projects. This role covers a wide geographical remit. Suitable locations include; Bangor, Chester, Birmingham, Gloucester, Shrewsbury, Bristol, Bath, Plymouth, Southampton, Weston-Super-Mare, Swindon and the areas of either Devon or Cornwall.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to a Senior Buyer, the successful Buyer – Civil Engineering will be supporting the team in

leading procurement for all sectors of the Griffiths business in order to deliver best value, high quality, innovation, collaboration, risk reduction and opportunity optimisation. You will ideally have experience with NEC Contracts and have a background in Buying / Procurement from within a Civil Engineering environment. 

On a day-to-day basis, the successful duties and responsibilities of the Buyer – Civil Engineering will include the following (not exhaustive): 

  • The implementation and continuous improvement of the company’s procurement processes and procedures 
  • Supporting Griffiths’ business strategy and business plans, working closely with the team to roll-out key initiatives and achieve the organisation’s strategic goals 
  • Attending contract handover meetings to ensure the delivery of materials and sub-contractors on time and within budget 
  • Develop and implement robust supply chain relationships to support business and project goals
  • Assisting with the composing of tender lists and diligent analytical review of tender returns 
  • Supporting the Pre-Construction and Estimating teams in-design meetings, product selection, obtaining quotations for cost certainty and supply chain development at Tender stage 
  • Arranging and attending pre-start meetings with supply chain and Griffiths Team. 
  • Ensuring the tendering, negotiation and placement of sub-contract orders and material orders in line with the bid submission timescales 
  • Supporting the Senior Buyers and delivery teams, to provide comprehensive procurement advice, guidance and the necessary information to delivery teams, to support the successful commercial approach to sub-contracts and material procurement 

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have previous experience as a Buyer – Civil Engineering and have the following skills/experience: 

  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in the drafting of sub-contracts within the Civil Engineering sector; and in particular, NEC would be preferable 
  • Be familiar with estimating software (Causeway) and ERP System (COINS), managing the use of these within the Procurement Team 
  • Proven experience of relationship building with supply chain and customers 
  • Demonstrable experience of procuring sub-contracts in accordance with standard forms 
  • Excellent grammar and language skills 
  • Excellent IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint mandatory) 

We would encourage you to apply if you have experience in any of the following: 

  • Minimum three years’ experience as a Buyer – Civil Engineering within the Civil Engineering, Rail or Utilities Sector 
  • Knowledge of modern civil engineering techniques, plant & equipment and an appreciation of logistical needs and issues
